Mahogany Chest
what’s the best way to ’strip’ stain off of mahogany wood???

I have this old dresser/chest that I want to refurbish, but I’ve never worked with mahognay…any suggestions???????????

If it’s real old it won’t work well with strippers. It will mostly need to be sanded down to the bare wood and you will need a power sander for most of it and at least two grades of sandpaper. One to get the finish off I would use about a 150-180 grit and one to smooth it back up for restaining about 220-240 grit. Careful though if it is veneer you could sand through it. If it’s solid don’t worry. Look the piece over for sanding marks left behind and sand them all out by going with the grain. Mahogany is mostly a red color but sometimes it is yellow. So when you stain it you might want to sap stain the parts that don’t match by applying a little red stain to the yellow wood and visa versa. Then stain all over.
Edit: When sanding the piece down make sure to go with the grain and apply even pressure for the best job. Don’t use an orbital sander unless you really know what you are doing because it will eat Mahogany up and leave sanding swirls in the wood.
